With the drastic weather change in the past two weeks, it now appears our March outing will be to the open waters of our area lakes. Each of these lakes is now hosting newly arriving waterfowl to varying degrees. So, our plan will be to tour Snyder's Bend, Sandhill Lake, New Lake, Brown's Lake, Owego and some additional stops in between. We expect to see 20 or more species of ducks and geese plus additional water birds, such as grebes, gulls, coots and waders.
In fact, this winter's massive fish kill at Snyder's Bend may give us an unprecedented opportunity to find gulls opportunistically feeding on the bounty.
Meet at the NW corner of the Singing Hills Walmart in Sioux City at 7:30 am. From there we will car caravan to the nearby lakes. We will continue to exercise social distancing and mask wearing, when appropriate. These Audubon outings are open to the public and are a great way for beginning birders to learn from the more experienced.
