Additional waterfowl and other water related birds are drawn to the expansive water area at Gavin’s Point Dam. Loons, grebes, gulls, terns, early shorebirds and waders will be our objectives, each being more likely here than at our local, smaller oxbow lakes.
We will meet at the public boat ramp at Chris Larsen Park on the Sioux City waterfront at 7:00 AM on Saturday, April 9 for the 75 minute drive to the dam. Others wishing to meet us on site should meet at the Pearson Ranch access to Lake Yankton (below the dam) on the South Dakota side at 8:15am.
We will proceed to various vantage points around Lake Yankton, the dam and Lewis and Clark Lake where viewing from the car at roadsides or parking lots is the norm. Spotting scopes on tripods will be available for close-up views of the birds we find.
