The LHAS will hold its monthly outing this Saturday, 10 April. Participants are to meet at the Northwest corner of the Singing Hills Walmart parking lot at 7:30am. All outings are open to the public, and we invite bird enthusiasts of all experience levels.
Though ducks and geese have largely passed through our area, we still await other waterbirds such as loons, grebes, waders and shorebirds to arrive. A typical April is characterized by meltwater or rainwater accumulated in ancient oxbow depressions in floodplain croplands and pastures where we might find shorebirds, ducks, herons and egrets. However, these traditional sites are currently bone dry so we will look for these species at the larger, more persistent oxbows such as New, Brown's, Badger and Sandhill Lakes, which have very low water levels but much in the way of mudflats and shallow water edges,
Safe practices will be followed enroute and at each of our stops. The outing is scheduled to last till lunchtime, and some participants will gather for lunch or bring lunch for our last stop. I am looking forward to our group finding birds and enjoying the Great Outdoors. For more information, please contact Bill at 712-574-3107 or billfhuser@gmail.com.
