Join us as we count birds for the 25th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). This citizen science project organized by the National Audubon Society, The Cornell Lab and Birds Canada, gathers bird occurrence data much like the Christmas Bird Count. Loess Hills Audubon teams will center at the Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve feeding station and at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center’s feeders. Teams will include feeder watchers situated in warm interiors and hikers venturing further afield and into colder environs. Both centers will open for us at 9 AM. Each team will remain on site till approximately noon.
Gather at the Chris Larsen Park public boat landing on the Sioux City waterfront at 7:30 AM to volunteer for duty. We will count birds at Larsen and Riverside Parks before dividing up into teams and traveling to the two Nature Centers. Anyone wanting to skip the early morning meet and go directly to either Maude Adams or Dorothy Pecaut may do so. However, please notify me (see below for contact info) of your plans, in advance, so we can even out our numbers at the two sites.
Those unable to join us are urged to participate in the GBBC on this date or anytime during the February 18 through 21 count period. Data may be submitted through the eBird mobile app or at the eBird website.
