Loess Hills Audubon Society program featuring photographer Jerry Mennenga.
Jerry worked for various newspapers in Illinois, Texas, Louisiana, California and Iowa for 27-plus years. He began with weekly papers and moved to dailies, first as a writer, in 1982, then as a full-time photographer in 1984, but without the benefit of formal photojournalism training.
Please have a look at Jerry’s blog: Lost in Siouxland, a self-described hodgepodge of various topics of interest. The blog began in 2012 as a way to continue the photojournalism craving of meeting new people, seeing new sights and sharing those experiences with others.
When the pandemic became more widely understood and events and other aspects of life began shuttering Jerry started spending more time in his backyard, at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve and in other outdoor places photographing nature. He always enjoyed shooting landscape photos to obtain a sense of place but the challenge of photographing animals, especially small birds, brought a new interest in trying to capture nature. Especially trying to capture aspects of animals that have what humans might think are humanistic qualities that we apply to animals based on our own interpretations.
His program will be a collection of images showing nature, landscapes and animals in various settings in various places. But the real joy of the photography is actually in the photographing and traveling to visit these local places to witness what is there.
Jerry still shoots some editorial assignments as well as photographic services for local clients.
LHAS Board Meeting begins at 6:00 PM with Jerry’s program beginning at 7:00 PM.
