Southbound waterfowl, terns, gulls and eagles, attracted by the open expanses of Lewis & Clark Lake, will draw us upriver in search of these migrants. During past Novembers, the lake and dam have attracted marine ducks, such as the three scoter species, vagrant gulls such as, Glaucous, Iceland, Great Black-backed and Ross’s, Arctic Terns, Loons and Red-necked Grebes. These species are more readily seen in the Fall than during our previous March or April visits to the Lake.
Those interested should join the group at the public boat launch parking lot in Chris Larsen Park on the Sioux City riverfront at 7:00am. The route will include I-29 and SD Hwy 50 and bring us to the dam at 8:20 for those that wish to meet us then at the Pierson Ranch access to Lake Yankton below the dam.
Weather will probably dictate whether an indoor or outdoor lunch is more inviting, so come prepared for either.
