LHAS Christmas Bird Count

  • Loess Hills Audubon Society PO Box 5133 Sioux City, IA, 51109 United States (map)

For the 123rd year, the National Audubon Society is organizing the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC). The twelve decades’ worth of data collected by participants contribute to one of only two large existing pools of information notifying ornithologists and conservation biologists of what conservation action is required to protect birds and the places they need.

Each individual count takes place in a 15-mile-wide circle and is led by a compiler responsible for safely organizing volunteers and submitting observations directly to Audubon. Within each circle, participants tally all birds seen or heard that day—not just the species but total numbers to provide a clear idea of the health of that particular population.

We need counters in the field as well as people watching and counting at their feeders! Get involved in one of the largest and most enduring and endearing citizen science projects in the world.

Last year, the 122nd Audubon CBC included 2,621 count circles worldwide. In total, 76,880 observers out in the field and watching feeders tallied up more than 42 million birds representing about 2,500 different species.
