The Chapter will participate in the National Audubon Society’s Great Backyard Bird Count on Saturday, February 13. This count is much like the Christmas Bird Count but with fewer rules and restrictions.
We will form several small teams, each birding a site of their own preference. Each team will bird their site, or sites, for whatever length of time fits their schedule. Teams will record the species they find and count or estimate the number of individuals present.
Results can be submitted at www.birdcount.org by one of three methods:
The Merlin Bird ID app,
The eBird mobile app or
The eBird website.
I recommend keeping a paper list in the field and entering your counts at the end of the day at the eBird website, www.ebird.org. So, if you haven’t set up an account for yourself, try to do so in advance of the Count. If you are not comfortable using this or another method, you can forward your list to me.
Those interested in participating as part of any of our Chapter teams should contact me. I will try to group those interested into teams. Teams will be small and will abide by local recommendations for Covid prevention.
Sites we hope to count include Stone State Park, Ponca State Park, Adams Homestead, Owego Wetlands and Bacon Creek Park. Select a site, recruit a team and contact me.
