Birdathon 2023

Saturday, 13 may 2023

The Loess Hills Audubon Society recently held its annual Birdathon to raise funds for Chapter projects. Much like other “-athons,” donations are pledged based on chapter members’ ability to find as many species of birds as they can during this two-day period.

All in all, our hard-working teams, found a grand total of 104 species. The Chapter thanks all participants for their time and effort. Lists were submitted by fourteen birders in seven teams. Birdathon participants: Jerry Probst, Jerry VonEhwegen, Jan Null, Bill Zales, Anne Shaner, Pam Miller-Smith, Kevin & Marla Zerr, John & Sharon Prolifka, Rex Rundquist, Pam Pfautch, Dotty Zales, and Bill Huser.

NOW, THE CRITICAL PORTION OF THE PROJECT FOLLOWS:

  • Each participant/team is requested to collect all their pledged donations and send them to me.

  • Each donor who pledged a donation is requested to forward it to your team or directly to me.

  • Each additional person who would like to donate to the Chapter’s projects is asked to send an amount based on the number of species found or a flat amount of your choosing. Be sure to designate it as ‘Birdathon.’

(Note: Make checks out to ‘Loess Hills Audubon Society’)

Most importantly, the Chapter thanks all of you who have donated to Chapter projects and to those of you who considered such.

 Birdathon 2022

May 14-15, 2022

The 8 teams searching six local counties found a total of 137 species, while two additional teams birding farther afield in Indiana (IN), Eastern Iowa (EIA) and Colorado (CO) found an additional 19 species for a grand total of 156 species. These two totals compare with 150 and 168 species, respectively, with similar effort in 2021. The Chapter thanks all participants (see below) for their time and effort. Here are our hightlights:

Thank you to all 15 participants for their time and effort.

 Loess Hills Audubon Society Bird-A-Thon

by Paul Roisen—Bird-A-Thon Czar, June 2, 2020

What a "rush" for me to arrive home after a week in Wichita, KS. A donation record amount had already been achieved and I was expecting a couple checks. Anna and I arrived home to seven additional letters addressed to: LHAS c/o Paul Roisen. Interestingly, only one was from someone I expected. The additional donations added $712.00 to our previous total.

New record of 194 species
New record of (so far) of $4004.80

Just in case there is still someone who wishes to send in a donation--WE WILL GLADLY ACCEPT anything more that comes in. Please make your check out to "The Loess Hills Audubon Society" and mail to: Loess Hills Audubon Society, c/o Paul Roisen, 4420 3rd Ave, Sioux City, IA 51106.

No further MailCHIMP report will be sent out regarding the 2020 Bird-A-Thon totals.

Final totals will be updated in our NEXT LHAS newsletter.

The Loess Hills Audubon Board of Directors will begin consideration of what conservation projects we will support for the 2020-2021 year. Please feel free to attend our summer planning session (date to be determined) and the next couple of board meetings to help us make good decisions.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR INCREDIBLE RESPONSE. We were blessed with 35+ donations ranging from $20.00 to four amounts over the $200.00 mark. One person pledged $5 for the first 50 species and $10 above 50 species (what I thought was $15 total)... BUT... it was for EACH species for a total of a $1690.00 donation. I am not easily surprised or shocked but...what can I say I was literally speechless (yes, I know most of you know that never happens). All I could do was SHOW the check to my wife. She read it wrong and I had to explain to her that she needed to add at least one more ZERO to what she read.

I am absolutely humbled by your generosity.
I am open for questions or comments 24/7 so please do not hesitate to contact me anytime.
